(b. Vilnius, Lithuania 1890; d. Sío Paulo, 1957).
Lithuanian painter and printmaker, active in Brazil. Segall was trained in the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Berlin from 1906 to 1909. He moved to Dresden in 1910 where he became a member of German Expressionist movement. He first went to Brazil in 1912 where his works were to be exhibited; therefore becoming an early influence on Brazilian expressionism. He funded the Gruppe 1919 des Desdner Sezession with Otto Dix, Otto Lange and others. From 1914 to 1923 he lived in Dresden, where he participated in Expressionist exhibitions and published a book of five etchings, Souvenirs of Vilna (Dresden, 1919). A teacher and organizer, when he moved to Brazil permanently in 1932, he also funded the Sociedade Pró-Arte Moderna (SPAM) in 1932 along with other early modernists in Sao Paolo like Anita Malfatti and Tarsila do Amaral.
