In Los Angeles, Siqueiros' work reflected a developing interest in the use of industrial materials. When his American visa expired in 1933, Siqueiros traveled throughout South American and returned to the U.S. in 1936. He settled in New York and organized an experimental art school where he taught his mural techniques using industrial materials. One of his students was Jackson Pollack. Before returning to Mexico for good Siqueiros fought in the Spanish Civil war from 1937-39.

In Mexico, Siqueiros completed numerous mural projects and continued his radical political involvement, he is even said to have participated in a pro-Stalin plot to kill Leon Trotsky. In 1960 Siqueiros was imprisoned for four years. After his release in 1964 he began working on his largest mural project The March of Humanity.

He received the Mexican Government's National Prize for Art in 1966 as well as the Lenin Peace prize from the Soviet Union in 1967. Siqueiros has had major retrospectives of his work in Mexico City and Tokyo. He died in Mexico City in 1974 and is buried in the Rotunda of Illustrious Men.
