(b. Montevideo Uruguay, 1922; d. Seravezza, Italy, 1997). Uruguayan artist born in Montevideo, he studied architecture at the Universidad de la República Oriental. In 1942 he met Joaquín Torres-García and was one of the founding members of the Taller Torres García. His interest in ancient cultures took him in an archeological exploration of Near and Far East. Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1958, he traveled to New York where he received several commissions to paint murals. In the 50s he executed constructivist reliefs in concrete and wood. After 1964 he worked mainly in stone. Since 1970 he divides his time between New York and Carrara, Italy. Fonseca´s work is an invitation to explore the degree in which the viewer can become part of the artistic project by moving and rearranging the objects at his wish.
