(b. Palmares, Pernambuco, Brazil, 1952).
This Brailian artist was born Antonio José de Barros Carvalho e Mello Mourío. The influence from his BA in Architecture from the Universidade Santa Ursula in Rio de Janeiro can be seen in his work. His large-scale sculptural pieces blur the line between the exterior and interior spaces; however, he explorers the interior and exterior of the mind. He founded two magazines "Malasartes" (1975) and "A parte do Fogo" (1980) along with fellow artists. He draws upon the Latin American industrial and pre-Colombian past to create images of deep unease and reflection. Industrial Latin America and pre-Columbia create a duality also present in his work. This duality works on many levels leaving a sense of individuality yet the individuals are one. Many of the materials he uses are magnetic creating an atmosphere of elements attracting each other.
