Abstract: Three paper recyclers on a pilgrimage to “the other side” take part in the annual Mama Negra festivities in Latacunga, in Ecuador’s northern mountain range, where Catholic imagery merges with African tradition in a celebration of spiritual and earthly redemption. With scenes of joy and delirium rooted in baroque and carnival traditions, Blak Mama features dance coreographies, songs and animated sequences depicting the Mama Negra street procession, along with the recyclers’ spiritual journey. Blak Mama was officially selected for the AFI Latin American Film festival in 2009.
