(b. Honda, Colombia, 1939; d. Bogotá, Colombia, 1993). This Columbian painter graduated with an engineering degree that influenced his esthetic philosophy and the appreciation of the human proportions valued by the Greeks and the humanistic teachings of the Renaissance. His work tries to examine and extol the universal values of his homeland and its people. It is this interest that sparked an interest in the forgotten mythology of the Magdalena River, near where he was born. Devis’ work often takes a postmodern interest in his sociological investigations that manifest themselves in his paintings. He often depicts the human condition in relation to the conflicting themes of consumerism, north-south, high-low art dichotomies. His projects often involve quoting and re-appropriating the old masters such as El Greco, Van Eyk, Rembrandt, Velásquez, Michelangelo, Leonardo within the discursive language of his contemporary Colombia.
