(b. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1937; d. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1980).
He gained recognition for his sculptures that deal with issues of space and sensory experience. He first studied art with the painter Ivan Serpa who founded the Frenete Group associated with Neo-Concrete artists. In 1955 Oticica joined the Frenete Group and exhibited in group shows. His sculpture exploring the movement of the spectator in relationship to the work of art were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio in 1965. Samba movement provided the source of inspiration for his interest in movement and he became involved with studying and performing dance. He was given a retrospective exhibition in London at the Whitechapel gallery in 1969 and had numerous other international exhibitions and retrospectives.
