Carrington is best known for her unique autobiographical Surrealist paintings, as well as numerous drawings and has published fiction, poetry, drama and essays. Carrington was born in Lancashire England in 1917. Her wealthy socialite family insisted on a strict Catholic upbringing that Carrington rebelled against. She attended and was expelled from convent schools in Essex and Ascot as well as finishing schools in Florence and Paris. She lived with Max Ernst in Paris and exhibited with the Surrealists. With Ernsts internment in World War II she fled first to Spain, then Portugal and then finally landed in New York. She moved to Mexico in 1942 and became a Mexican citizen through her marriage to Renato Leduc. It was in Mexico that she became involved with Remedio Varo who shared her interest in alchemy, witchcraft and dream interpretation. These new influences led to Carrington develop her unique style of Surrealist painting. Her first solo exhibition
