(b. Guadalajara, Mexico, 1865; d, Mexico City, 1964). Murillo was recognized as a painter, theorist, writer, printmaker, politician and scientist. He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1865, He studied painting in Guadalajara and then in Mexico City. He traveled to Rome in 1897 where he earned a Ph.D. in philosophy and law. Upon completing his studies he traveled throughout Europe and was most influenced by the French impressionist painters. He gave himself the name Dr Alt in 1902, inspired by the Nahuatl word for water. When he returned from Europe he began teaching at San Carlos Academy in Mexico City. Some of his students included Rivera, Orozco and Siqueiros. He returned to Europe at the outbreak of the Mexican revolution and took up the study of volcanology. He returned to Mexico in 1913. In 1920 he was appointed the director of the Mexican Government Department of Fine Art in 1920. Atl continued to study and paint volcanoes through out the 1920's and 30's. His spiritual
