(b. Rosario, Argentina, 1899; d. Verese, Italy, 1968). Is a renowned figurative sculptor known for his experiments with space and surfaces. Fontana came from a long line of Italian sculptors and artists. He was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1899. From 1914-15 he attended the Carlo Catteneo School for Master Builders, in Milan. After serving in the military during WWI he enrolled in the Berra Academy in Milan in 1920. He returned to Argentina and in 1924 opened his own sculpture studio. He continued to study sculpture and in 1928 returned to Europe to finish his degree at the Berra Institute. He was represented in the Venice Biennale and the 1st Florence International Exhibition in 1931. In 1935 he met Miro, Tzara and Brancusi in Paris and joined the Abstract-Creation group. He returned to Argentina in 1939. In 1946 he was involved in the organization of the Academia d'Altimira art school in Buenos Aires. He became involved with the Madí group and grew increasingly interested in
