(b. Montevideo, Uruguay, 1874; d. Montevideo, Uruguay, 1949).
Torres-García is recognized for his painting but worked in a wide variety of media, he is also known for key role in the Constructivist Movement. Torres-García was born in Montevideo in 1874. His father was a merchant who emigrated from Catalonia and his mother was Uruguayan. In 1891 the family returned to Mataro, near Barcelona, in Spain. Torres-García began studying painting and drawing at Academia Baixas under Antonio Souza and in 1900 enrolled in the Escuela Oficial de Bellas Artes in Barcelona. In Barcelona he worked as an illustrator for a magazine and began exhibiting his art. He became involved in circles of bohemian artists and avant-garde intellectuals. He painted frescos in important buildings in Barcelona including the government palaces and the Salon de San Jorge, as well as the Church of St Agustin, and the Church of the Divine Shepherdess.
