Havana Biennial 2000
by Susana Bautista and Bill Kelley

Day III

Today was the official opening of the 7th Havana International Biennial of Art for the press - more than 240 journalists, critics, and reporters from all over Cuba and the world. The day started off with a press conference with Nelson Herrera Ysla, Director of the Biennial, and other curators and art professionals from Havana. Image 1 Of all the contemporary art Biennials that have sprung up in the last ten years or so, the Havana Biennial is the oldest that started in 1983.

We ended this wonderful art-filled day with a reception at the residence of the United States senior officer of the Special Interests Section in Havana to welcome all the major U.S. art institutions that are visiting Havana for the Biennial. Some of these included the Museum of Modern Art from New York, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Atlanta Museum of Art, and many individual curators, collectors, and professionals that came from the U.S. for this important event. Through the Art in Embassies program, this beautiful colonial mansion was filled with contemporary artworks. Image 5 Image 6.
