Carta [Letter] functions as a coded statement of the exhibition. What appears to be a hieroglyph or an abstract drawing is actually the invitation sent by the curators to the artists. Transferring the movements of a hand on the keyboard, Méndez captures the writing moment and creates a personal cryptic code. Placed at the entrance of the exhibition, the piece perverts the normative use of the introductory wall text that is part of the exhibitionary complex. In this case a private document is made public, but its content remains unaccessible to the visitors, since it has been disclosed only to the show’s participants.
